Gubernatorial Elections
New Jersey
On November 3rd 2009 the state of New Jersey will hold a gubernatorial election. Current Democratic Governor Jon Corzine is running for a second term. He will be challenged by Republican candidate Christopher Christie who won the Republican primary held on June 2nd 2009.
Virginia
On November 3rd 2009 the state of Virginia will hold a gubernatorial election and also select a Lietenant Governor and Attorney General. Current Governor Tim Kaine is not eligible to run because of term limits.
Democratic State Senator Creigh Deeds won the Democratic primary held on June 9th 2009. Republican Attorney General Bob McDonnell was uncontested in the Republican primary.
House of Representatives Elections in 2009
California
On July 14th 2009 a special election will be held to fill a vacancy in California's 32nd Congressional district caused when current Rep. Hilda Solis who was confirmed on February 24th 2009 as United States Secretary of Labor for the Obama administration.
A primary was held on May 19th 2009. Democrat California Board of Equalization member Judy Chu won the nomination of her Party; Republican Monterey Park City Councilmember Berry Chu won the nomination of her Party; Libertarian businessman Christopher Agrella won the nomination of his Party.
Illinois - Decided
Illinois 5th
On April 7th 2009 a special election was held in Illinois 5th Congressional district to replace Rep. Rahm Emanuel who became President Barack Obama's Chief of Staff. Democrat Michael Quigley defeated Republican Rosanna Pulido and Green Party representative Matt Reichel.
New York
New York 20th - Decided
On March 31st a special election was held in New York's 20th Congressional District. The seat became open when Kirsten Gillibrand was appointed Senator of New York by Governor David Patterson to succeed Senator Hillary Clinton who is now serving as President Barack Obama's Secretary of State.
The race was won by Democrat Scott Murphy who defeated Republican Jim Tedisco who was the Minority Leader of the New York State Assembly. Each candidate was nominated by State Party Committees and not nominated through primaries.
Potential Races
California 10th
Current Representative Ellen Tauscher has been nominated to the position of Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security by the Obama administration. If she is confirmed she will resign her seat and a special election will occur to fill the vacancy.
New York 23rd
Current Representative Republican John M. McHugh has been nominated to the post of United States Secretary of the Army. If confirmed he will resign his seat and New York Governor David Patterson will issue a proclamation for a special election held within 30 to 40 days. No primaries will be held, instead the State Party Committees will choose nominees.
