The Blogosphere Also Gives Us A Sea of White Males

August 6th, 2007

Found via Wonkette:

“It’s mostly white. More male than female,” says the former high school math and science teacher turned activist. “It’s not very diverse.”

There goes the open secret of the netroots, or those who make up the community of the Internet grass-roots movement.

For all the talk about the increasing influence of this growing group — “We are a community . . . a movement . . . an institution,” Cooper said in a speech Saturday night — what gets scant attention is its demography. While the Huffington Post and Fire Dog Lake, both founded by women, are two of the most widely read blogs, the rock stars are mostly men, and many women bloggers complain of sexism and harassment in the blogosphere.

It is an interesting note simply because so many who talk of the online “revolution” talk about it in terms of progressive politics and diversity. Though as someone who is close with the IT & computer science world the majority of the people in those fields are either white males or Asian males. So it is not a surprise to see the blogosphere skewing in one direction. Especially keeping in mind Asian Americans make up a little over 4% of the population. Note African Americans makeup 14% of the population but are grossly underrepresented in the math/science/technology/engineering fields as are woman who actually makeup more than 50% of the population.

(Note to readers, I myself am a white male.)

Republican Debate Recap

August 5th, 2007

Frankly I skipped this one and plan on just fast forwarding to highlights. These debates have become pretty unproductive and like it or not Internet community the snowman thing kind of threw me over in taking any of them seriously. Luckily it seems like that is the general consensus. The L.A. Times writes “GOP’s Iowa debate hardly must-see TV”.

RedState nicely summer up the major events of the night which included a dust-up between Sam Brownback & Mitt Romney as well as the line from Romney about Barack Obama “gone from Jane Fonda to Dr. Strangelove” on foreign policy.

Other blogs to look at:
Hugh Hewitt who looks over all the reactions (He didn’t watch the debates either) as well as the post-debate press releases.

August 5th, 2007

Romney at the RNC debate today discussing Senator Barack Obama’s recent foreign policy statements:

“I mean, in one week he went from saying he’s going to sit down, you know, for tea, with our enemies, but then he’s going to bomb our allies,” said Romney. “I mean, he’s gone from Jane Fonda to Dr. Strangelove in one week.” (Associated Press)
