TIVO & The YouTube/CNN Debate Revolution

July 23rd, 2007

My old curmudgen side reared its ugly head yesterday as I put a sour spin on the first ever YouTube/CNN debate tonight. Thanks for noting it TechPresident!

Anyway I just wanted to start out tonights round of debate talk with this little note. My TIVO apparently has no idea this tech revolution is about to occur, it isn’t on the programming guide. Instead the typical, Situation Room, Paula Zahn, Larry King lineup is there.

If anyone else out there in the blogosphere has a TIVO and noticed something different feel free to let me know in the comments or through e-mails [jeff at electiongeek.com]

I just hope CNN can get the microphones working this time around!

Newt Gingrich Takes a Different Strategy

July 23rd, 2007

Well New Gingrich, the former Speaker of the House & much rumored potential candidate has a lot to say and its not very positive.

On the GOP Field he says the candidates are a “pathetic” bunch “of pygmies”.

On Chris Matthews and the Republican debate he held “You’re watching an utterly irrelevant, shallow television celebrity dominate everybody who claimed they want to lead the most powerful nation in the world. These are not debates, these are auditions. By definition, the psychology of an audition reduces the person auditioning and raises the status, for example, of Chris Matthews.”

On the current format of the debates he said he is unwilling to “shrink to the level of 40-second answers, standing like a trained seal, waiting for someone to throw me a fish”.

On John McCain “The guy who had spent the most on consultants is on the verge, I think, of dropping out of the race, right after he collects his FEC [Federal Elections Commission] money.”

On columnist Robert Novak “Sometimes he’s right and sometimes he’s just venomous….He was once a good reporter, he’s now just a personality.”

On Al Gore “[Not] in touch with reality. … The advertisement for his movie was the most viciously anti-animal advertising that I’ve seen in a long time. They had these little penguins walking on sand. It was terrible.”

On Michael Moore “I find Michael Moore so despicable I can’t imagine looking at a movie by him. It would be like looking at a movie by Goebbels.”

He says the following about running:

If, in mid-October, it’s quite clear that one or more of the current candidates is strong enough to be a serious alternative to a Clinton-Obama ticket, you don’t need me to run,” the former House Speaker said at a breakfast sponsored by the American Spectator. “If it becomes patently obvious, as the morning paper points out, that the Democrats have raised a hundred million more than the Republicans, and at some point people decide we are going to get Hillary unless there’s a radical change, then there’s space for a candidate,” he added. “So you’ll know by mid-October one of those two futures is real.”

Living Up to the Geek Name

July 22nd, 2007

Hello everyone. It has been a bit since I’ve given a site update so I thought I would take a moment to do so.

I have the opposite problem of many Web managers out there. I have TOO MUCH content to provide, so much that there is barely anything here. Sounds kind of contradictory but its true. What I am lacking isn’t content or data but the time to actually bring it to you. See unlike all those fancy MSNBC/CNN type organizations ElectionGeek is a one man show. Just me, a laptop and a lot of data. A LOT of data.

On the Eve of the First YouTube Debate

July 22nd, 2007

So tomorrow night at 7:00 POLITICS AS WE KNOW IT WILL BE REVOLUTIONIZED. Seriously politicians will answer the questions they have always ignored, will stop reading from speeches and get to the heart and soul of the nation’s deepest thoughts and feelings and the Internet will take over politics and solve all the worlds problems. Why? Because a bunch of people sitting in their living rooms will ask candidates questions through a Web cam which they submitted months before and have already been screened by the campaigns press offices. Watch out MSM (that is Main Stream Media for you non-tech-Web-2.0 people) because this debate will be brought to you by, well, CNN, which is part of the MSM. Wait what?

OK this thing won’t revolutionize politics, it probably won’t even be interesting television, but it has given all the Web sites and CNN itself endless chatter and chances to promote so it is good. Here is what I think you can expect from the debate(s) and why.

Is Kucinich A Debate Hypocrite?

July 22nd, 2007

That is what Mari Evans claims on the blog Celebescene. Mari points out that Kucinich, who has been infuriated over the prospect of losing national airtime during Democratic debates, has refused to debate congressional opponents. This lead to opponent Barbara Anne Ferris taking extreme measures and interrupting (read crash) a public summit hosted by Kucinich after he refused to debate her.

Ben Smith also pointed this out not long ago in The Politico and had a quote from Kucinich who claimed his limiting of democratic debate was different because of “personalities”. What that means, I have no idea.
