Fact-Checking Sen. Clinton

June 25th, 2007

Paul West at the Baltimore Sun finds Hillary Clintons numbers just don’t add up when it comes to comparing bankruptcies with graduation rates.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York is taking a populist line in her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.

“We had more people going bankrupt last year than graduating from college. Yet, these are all invisible to the president and his administration,” Clinton told a gathering of liberal activists in Washington last week.

The “Issues” section of her campaign website, under the heading “Strengthening The Middle Class,” repeats the claim. “Last year, more people went bankrupt in our country than graduated from college.”

Actually, fewer than half as many people went bankrupt last year than graduated from college. A total of 597,965 individuals filed for personal bankruptcy in 2006, according to official statistics compiled by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. The U.S. Department of Education estimates that 1,456,000 students received bachelor’s degrees from four-year colleges in 2006.

I also thought the explanation from the Clinton campaign was apropo considering another Clinton explanation:

The initial explanation about her claim from the Clinton campaign: It depends on what your definition of the word “year” is. The campaign cited statistics for the 12-month period ending June 30, 2006, in which 1,453,008 personal bankruptcies were filed (most came in 2005, during the final push before the law changed).

DNC Already Attacking Fred Thompson

June 25th, 2007

Politico has noticed that the DNC is already attacking Fred Thompson (who hasn’t officially announced yet). Is it a sign of fear on the part of dems? A sign that the party has matured and is now ready to take on attacks early and often like the Republicans have in the past? Is it all just a bunch of fluff and meaningless? You be the judge:

“Remember the Republican culture of corruption?” the letter asks. “The revolving door of Republican politicians moving in and out of top political offices and Washington, D.C., lobbying firms? That’s Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson. For years, acting wasn’t the ‘Law & Order’ star’s profession — it was a hobby. In the real world, Thompson has made a fortune in a decades-long career as a Washington lobbyist. And just this month, as part of his role as the ultimate Washington insider, Thompson offered to host yet another fundraising event for Scooter Libby’s legal defense fund. Thompson has been vocal in his support of Libby, saying that he would ‘absolutely’ pardon him. As he runs for president, he’ll try his hardest to hide the truth from the American people. And we need to stop him. Support our efforts to get the truth out about Fred Thompson.”

Mike Gravel OR The Left’s Ron Paul Speaks

June 25th, 2007

He is Ron Paul without the online success. Mike Gravel has decided to attack frontrunner Hillary Clinton today at the Huffington Post. His remarks titled ‘Why Hillary Clinton scares me‘ tell of, well, I don’t really know. It is a bit rambling. Somehow Clinton & the entire Dem congress support Halliburton, the War and cronyism.

Frankly this video of Gravel scares the living daylights out of me. But to each his own.
