Wyoming Sen. Craig Thomas Passes Away
June 5th, 2007
In unfortunate political news Wyoming Sen. Craig Thomas (February 17, 1933 - June 4th 2007) has passed away after a long battle with leukemia.
In 1989 Thomas won a special election to replace Dick Cheney as Wyoming’s congressman in the United States House of Representatives, and he was re-elected to that seat in 1990 and 1992. In 1994, he ran for the United States Senate seat vacated by Malcolm Wallop, and won. He was elected second term as senator in 2000 by a 74 percent majority; one of the largest margins in Wyoming election history. He was re-elected to a third term in 2006 with 70 percent of the vote.
From Wyoming’s law the states governor will be given a list of three Republican candidates from a list submitted by the state GOP central committee from which he will pick the Senators successor.
