Winners & Losers - 6/17/2007

This week was a relatively quiet one on the campaign trail. We are getting closer to the end of Q2 fundraising and I am starting to think candidates are getting tired already! But there was still moving and shaking and here is a recap of where we stand.
Clinton & Obama
Bill & Hillary Clinton divested a good deal of their stock portfolio this week releasing them from some potentially embarrassing conflict of interest charges for the election. Most people reported on it and then moved on, but not the Barack Obama campaign which prepared two memos detailing everything it could find in the hopes of hitting Clinton hard. Score one for Obama? Actually, not so much.
In traditional Clinton media savvy the campaign was actually able to turn it into a slight win. How? By leaking the embarrassing memo’s to the press themselves and drawing more attention to Clinton’s financial holdings. Why? Because in so doing it made Obama, who has filled the campaign trail with talk of being a “different kind of candidate” look like, well, the same old kind of candidate.
It was worse than that though. The documents also contained language that was construed as “anti-Indian” by the Indian community forcing the campaign to officially apologize for the rhetoric.
This follows a bad few weeks of polling for Obama (South Carolina aside) who has seen his numbers slightly decrease in some states as word of his debate performance spread. Obama did pick up some kind of Internet stalker this week but it still looks like a win for Clinton.
More Bad News for McCain
Meanwhile Washington had a bit of a coup against the president two weeks ago when the president (and Congress’) immigration bill was voted down. The president vowed to revive it and this past week, with all seeming lost, he and Congress were able to raise the bill from the dead!
The problem? Almost every candidate with the exception of John McCain along with what appears to be the Republican base is against it. Meaning, as always, it was a bad week for John McCain.
Now McCain did go into heavy attack mode this week going after Mitt Romney. Romney’s campaign countered, McCain hit again.
Then Romney gave us this gem which summed up how many people saw these attacks - “I guess politics can get a little testy if you’re having a difficult time yourself.” - on the Michael Medved Radio Show this past Wednesday.
Most see the McCain campaign as a lost cause. This latest set of attacks along with McCain’s habit of being on the wrong side of the issues aren’t helping and so this week McCain seems to have lost while every other Republican who isn’t McCain on the trail seems to gain.
