RNC 2008 Plan? Copy the Democrats
January 24th, 2008
There is a story from The Hill getting a lot of circulation right now. Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan spoke at a morning breakfast meeting with reporters sponsored by The Christian Science Monitor and pointed to internal polls as evidence of how Republicans should move forward in a general election campaign to defeat the leading Democrats. His findings?
Internal RNC polls show Clinton has significant trust issues with voters, who also worry Obama has too little experience to be president.
“With Sen. Clinton, it comes down to trust,†Duncan said. “She’s a lifelong liberal politician with some political baggage.â€
The RNC’s polling on Clinton found that less than 50 percent of respondents see her as “honest and trustworthy.â€
Sixty-five percent say she “will say or do anything to get elected†and 68 percent “agree that Sen. Clinton will raise their taxes.â€
For those paying attention that information might sound familiar. Why? Because it basically reflects the two main arguments that have played out all year in the Democratic nomination fight. Obama & Edwards specifically attacking Clinton on trust, Clinton attacking Obama on experience. In short if you are a Republican strategist looking to be hired, you have the easiest PowerPoint presentation ever ahead of you. One slide “Everything He said” with a picture of Obama on it and the next slide “Everything she said” with a picture of Clinton on it.
Duncan said the RNC’s “first level†of attacks mirror those the Democratic candidates have made on one another.
“Are there more arguments to come? Yes,†he said.
Not to sound smug but methinks I know the Republican strategy in 2008. Taxes and defense with a sprinkling of dissecting every single vote and statement either Clinton or Obama has ever made. Which is great but as far as I see it Republicans might also want to try and nominate someone the people in their party will want to vote for because right now turnout is low and divided within the party. Just a thought!
