Are the Clinton’s Self Financing? (updated)

February 6th, 2008

Update 2 It is now confirmed, Clinton loaned her campaign $5 Million late last month.

Update: Marc Ambinder confirms that Hillary Clinton is “weighing” a loan to herself. He notes that both the loan and the delegate count help to go against Obama’s statement that he is the “underdog” against Clinton. His reasoning? If he is the underdog why is his opponent trailing in fundraising and delegates?

Bill and Hillary ClintonThe latest buzz in the rumor-mill is that the Clinton’s might be using some of their own money to help fund their campaign. Clinton raised more money in 2007 than her rival but in January the Obama camp announced an astounding $35 million intake.

Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson said he did not know if the Clinton’s were dipping into their own wealth.

If the Clinton’s are self-financing than it would go against this quote from Bill noted by Politico on December 24th 2007 and reported in the NY Sun where Mayor Bloomberg rebutted the idea:

“Let’s think of somebody I really admire, the mayor of New York City, Mike Bloomberg,” Clinton said. “I like him; he’s a really good mayor. But if he’s runs for president, he can spend a billion dollars and not miss it. That’s real money to most of us. Under the law, there are no constraints.”

He railed against the Supreme Court for blocking some attempts to limit the influence of money in politics.

And he implied that he would not use his own funds to support his wife’s candidacy.

“For example, they say you couldn’t stop me from spending all the money I’ve saved over the last five years on Hillary’s campaign if I wanted to, even though it would clearly violate the spirit of campaign finance reform,” he said.
