A Turnout Tsunami?
March 25th, 2008
Politico is speculating that the 2008 general election could see a turnout “tsunami” with the possibility of more than 61% of Americans, the record since 1968 achieved in 2004, heading to the polls.
The first clue about this year’s election came in the nation’s first primary on Jan. 8, when more than 529,711 New Hampshire residents voted in the Democratic and Republican primaries, smashing the state’s presidential primary record of 396,385 set in 2000.
“That’s usually a general election turnout number,” said Secretary of State Bill Gardner, noting that about 578,000 voted in the November 2000 general election.
I am slightly more skeptical. After months of negative ads, partisan bickering and lots of information about the two general election candidates records, I don’t know if we are going to see a “tsunami” though I would be surprised if we did not hold around the 2004 numbers.
