Straight Talk Express - A Little Too Straight
March 16th, 2007
So Senator John McCain saddled up on the Straight Talk Express this week reviving the now famous bus tour he used in 2000. The campaign touts the bus as a place where reporters can ask the candidate anything and everything and he will respond with “straight talk” about his beliefs. It was an idea that worked very well in 2000, until, well, he gave an unstraight answer and basically lied.
He also, unfortunetly used a racial slur during his 2000 tour referring to Vietnamese people as “gooks”, but hopes were high that this time things would be different, better and they were. March 15th, Day 1, went very well. Then came Day 2 and another racially insensitive remark. I can hardly wait for Day 3!!
This time McCain took on African Americans using the word ‘tar baby’ during a stop in Ceder Falls, Iowa. (For more information on the word check the Urban Dictionary)
McCain isn’t the first currently Republican candidate to use the term in public (and then apologize for it). Former Gov. Mitt Romney used the term just last year.
Wonkette opened the morning with a rather prescient look at McCain’s tour.
Thoughts From the Blogosphere:
A Little Reality asks What is it With Politicians and Tar-Baby References?
From the Left writes in Tar Baby Express
Grouchy’s Liberaltopia doesn’t think McCain should have apologized.
28bytes wrote two weeks ago that McCain was bound to say something like this and is amazed it happened so quick.
