Mitt Romney’s Hunting Past (Update)
April 5th, 2007
From DailyKos Mitt Romney’s continued problems in courting conservatives hit another road bump when he claimed to have been “a hunter all his life” but which a staffer later recounted was only two excursions into the wilderness in Romney’s sixty years of life.
Update: Romney’s original comments came on Tuesday, his campaigns rebuke came Wednesday and on Thursday a thread we have come to expect from the Romney campaign came with Romney trying to tie his conflicting record, his public statements and his campaign positions by saying he has hunted more then twice, just not “big game” instead Romney says he has hunted rats and rabbits his whole life but not the big animals.
To be honest I have to believe that conservative voters aren’t going to jump for joy to hear that a candidate, who has been caught flip-flopping on the issues they care about since day one of his campaign, is touting rat hunting as his credentials to be ‘like one of them’. If I were running the Romney campaign though I think there is an easy and humorous out. If Romney said something like the following I think it would help:
“Now you have all seen my record recently, you have heard the questions, received some conflicting information, but I want to set the record straight. When I become president I won’t be the most successful hunter to have stepped inside the White House but I do promise you I won’t let my inexperience at big game hunting lead to me shooting my best friend in the face.”
