Geek Corner - Reminder Debates Tonight

June 5th, 2007

Hello all, reminder that the Republicans will be debating on CNN & CNN.com tonight starting at 7:00pm.

I have been sick the last two days so sorry for the lack of updates.

Meanwhile ahead of the debate John McCain has been setting the stage for what will be a major issue tonight. He is attempting to turn the tables on his Republican opponents by saying if they don’t like his immigration bill they should come up with one of their own. He also says by doing nothing they actually create a silent amnesty. Will it stop the criticism? I doubt it, but it should make for an interesting debate. Make sure to tune in.

2.78 Million Viewers for CNN Debate

June 5th, 2007

That might not sound like a lot BUT for a Presidential PRIMARY debate this far out, not too shabby. Source: MediaBistro

Reminder another debate, this time with the Republicans, is on CNN tonight. HOPEFULLY they fixed the technical problems they kept running into this Sunday.

Wyoming Sen. Craig Thomas Passes Away

June 5th, 2007

Senator Craig ThomasIn unfortunate political news Wyoming Sen. Craig Thomas (February 17, 1933 - June 4th 2007) has passed away after a long battle with leukemia.

In 1989 Thomas won a special election to replace Dick Cheney as Wyoming’s congressman in the United States House of Representatives, and he was re-elected to that seat in 1990 and 1992. In 1994, he ran for the United States Senate seat vacated by Malcolm Wallop, and won. He was elected second term as senator in 2000 by a 74 percent majority; one of the largest margins in Wyoming election history. He was re-elected to a third term in 2006 with 70 percent of the vote.

From Wyoming’s law the states governor will be given a list of three Republican candidates from a list submitted by the state GOP central committee from which he will pick the Senators successor.

Geek Corner - More Aftermath & Widgets Galore

June 4th, 2007

It is always interesting when you watch something like the debates last night. Everyone takes from the event a little something different. In my opinion Biden was the closest thing to a breakout performance, Obama seemed shaky and not ready for prime time on policy, Edwards was tough but wavered, Clinton was the winner who clearly knew her stuff and took command on behalf of the group, Richardson couldn’t stop reminding us he was a governor and it got old, quick, Kucinich came off crazy and Gravel was whiny and not very statesmanlike.

If you go out on the Internet though you find an ENTIRELY different arrangement of beliefs. Obviously those in favor of Obama thought he won, those in favor of Edwards the same and down the line. Even from independents though I heard Richardson’s name thrown out a lot as the breakout, I’ve heard people say Biden was too aggressive, Edwards wasn’t aggressive enough, Kucinich was the life of the party, you name it.

In the end existence is all relative but it goes to show there is no objective “consensus” out there on almost anything. Which is why I always find it so funny when candidates & congresspeople try and claim there to be.

One consensus in my brain (though again I am sure I will find others with differing views) is that Wordpress, the software program that powers this blog, just got a major feature boost that I don’t know how I lived without. Wordpress now has widgets!

I use widgets on my mac, I’ve seen them on Vista, Yahoo makes their own as well. This is the first time though they have appeared on Wordpress. Basically they are little plugins that can be arranged, rearranged, toyed with, made, deleted and pushed to the limit of a blogs sidebar. Where I used to have to go into the code to add or subtract a feature, I can now just login to my admin panel and drag and drop different features. I love it!

If you are a wordpress user and want to upgrade your template, check out this link.

Also no this is by no means a paid plug, just something I thought I would share. When I find something fun or usable I like to toss them out there for people. Also its an easy way for me to keep track of things I discover and then easily forget about. This way when I sit around saying “what was that thing, with the stuff on Wordpress I liked?” I make it easier for myself.
