Romney to Add Own Money to Campaign - Again

June 26th, 2007

The New York Times is reporting that Mitt Romney will once again add money from his personal fortune to his 2008 Presidential campaign. Last quarter he gave the campaign a $2.35 million loan to get the operation started.

Romney also shocked most watchers last quarter by raising $23 million which was far more than his Republican opponents. However the campaign is trying to lower expectations for this quarter.

No figures have been yet released on how much Romney will give his campaign but we will all find out in the coming days/weeks as the second quarter paperwork is unveiled.

Donklephant: How To Use Web 2.0, The Ron Paul Way

June 26th, 2007

From the blogosphere Donklephant looks at some ideas around Ron Paul’s Web 2.0 strategy.

I have to say I don’t honestly know how much of this is strategy and how much of this is the election equivalent of ‘Vore Sanjaya’ but in the Internet buzz dept. whatever it is, it seems to be working for now.

In the same realm check out this article from Slate about how cell phones might be influencing the poll numbers in regards to Paul.

Fred Thompson Took Money or Something

June 26th, 2007

Well as I said yesterday the DNC and its surrogates are on the offense and going after Fred Thompson. The problem is, it seems like the same old, same old.

The charge is basically this. Thompson was a lobbyist who profited from Philip Morris and whom used his position as a former Senator to rake in money. So, basically, he worked in government.

Now I am by no means indifferent to the money-political influence-courting power problems in Washington and around the country. I just don’t think it makes for a powerful enough charge with the electorate. What Bill Clinton did was easy to understand, he cheated on his wife with an intern in the Oval Office. That is why it resonated so well.

Trying to figure out the weird money connections with lobbying & government etc. is complex and unless it is something you can successfully pin on an entire party under “corruption” it doesn’t really work. The Democrats have been trying this set of attacks for ages and though it was a blip on the radar in 2006 they shouldn’t rely on it alone.

Geek Corner: Immigration & Campaigning

June 26th, 2007

Today Congress will once again attempt to revive an immigration bill. The immediate outcome of any bill that provides for anything even resembling “amnesty” will be most felt on all the Republican candidates. The wisdom of the campaigns, aside from McCain’s and to a degree Giuliani’s, is this. Since the president and many Republicans in Congress are moving to the left, move as far as is humanly possible to the right.
