Obama’s Team Building
June 16th, 2008
Some interesting notes from the Obama campaign.
First The Fix looks at Obama’s reliance on operatives with close ties to former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle to win over key states. The articles says of this news “Obama’s reliance on old hands who know each other and have worked together in the past is a reflection of his understanding that even the most change-oriented candidate needs people with past political experience in the nitty gritty of campaign politics to guide his effort.”
Second The Fix also notes the recent hire of Jim Messina, currently serving as chief of staff to Montana Sen. Max Baucus, and who will share duties with current campaign manager David Plouffe as campaign manager.
Meanwhile the New York Times looks over Obama’s developing executive management skills, noting that until the campaigns first big primary failure the Senator remained distant and controlled with a very hands off approach. That changed after some advice to take control was given and since then he has been more active in the day-to-day of the campaign.
Of note is the comparison to Bush’s style, “Mr. Obama’s style so far is marked by an aversion to leaks and public drama and his selection of a small group of advisers who have exhibited discipline and loyalty in carrying out his priorities”, the article notes the country is “absorbing” the lessons learned from Mr. Bush who was also reliant on a small group of advisers in the process and “unable to distinguish between loyalty and competence”.
